Why Are My Gums Receding? Fort Mill, SC
teeth

Do your teeth look longer than they used to? Do you experience sensitivity when you eat ice cream or drink coffee? These are signs that you may have receding gums. Gum recession is a common oral health condition. It occurs when the soft tissues that support your teeth recess or lower down from their proper position on the tooth. This exposes the tooth root, which leaves the tooth more vulnerable to sensitivity and can also compromise the stability of the tooth if severe.

While it is sometimes harmless or caused by the natural aging process, gum recession can also be an indication of a more serious dental problem. It is important to see your dentist promptly if you notice signs of receding gums. Colgate lists the following most common causes of gum recession:

Overly aggressive brushing or flossing

Believe it or not, brusher harder does not equal brushing better. In fact, a gentle force with your toothbrush and floss is all that is needed to dislodge food debris and plaque. A soft bristled toothbrush is also recommended. If you are scrubbing your teeth aggressively, this may be the cause of your gum recession.

Genetics

You may be able to blame your parents for your receding gums. Just like other parts of your body, the characteristics of your gums can be inherited.

Abnormal tooth positioning

Misalignment can cause abnormal pressure on the gums, making them recede over time.

Grinding your teeth, or bruxism

If you notice gum recession along with morning headaches or a sore jaw, the culprit may be nighttime teeth grinding. A custom nightguard can protect your teeth, gums and jaw from this harmful habit.

Trauma to gum tissue

A direct injury to a tooth can also lead to gum recession around the affected tooth. Restoring the tooth is a primary concern.

Poor oral health

Last but certainly not least, gum recession can be a warning sign of periodontal disease. At this stage, the infection needs to be treated promptly to prevent further recession, bone loss and tooth loss.

"This was my first appointment with Gold Hill Dentistry so I didn’t exactly know what to expect. However prior to my visit I did google their reviews which were exceptional. That being said, my first visit certainly align with their online reviews! Gold Hill Dentistry’s staff were warm, professional but personable, and they made me feel very comfortable from the moment I entered their office and throughout the entire time services were performed. My cleaning results were great and my teeth and gums felt wonderful! I look forward to a long relationship with Gold Hill Dentistry!"

R.K.

B.S.

"Gold Hill Dentistry is the absolute best! From the front desk, to the hygienists, to the doctor, they were all great. They bent over backwards to accommodate my special health situation and urgent scheduling needs. And the drilling/filling they did was the quickest and most painless I've ever had. Don't think twice about making them your new go-to for dental work."

C.I.

"Office Staff, dental hygienists, and the dentists are all wonderful. Always friendly, helpful, professional and excellent. With so many "doc in the box" dental centers popping up, Gold Hill is a welcome exception where personal service and attention matter. (I should mention too, that the service does not come at premium cost - they take insurance and their rates are competitive and reasonable). Highly recommend Gold Hill Dentistry."

V.K.

"I really like Gold Hill Dentistry. Everyone is very very friendly and helpful. They are really concerned about your care."
